Though I still think it should have been lighter :/

For myself, I found the easiest way to learn how to properly shade was to grab a good piece of pixel art, screenie-ing it xD
For example this onigiri [link] or this sushi [link]
and then looking at it close up and then following suit with my own shading (but obviously not of the same thing)

This is also a pretty simple tutorial, but a bit more complex than your own shading, so I thought it could help [link]
